AGE#

I had heard of this Yoga teacher by some friends, and when I was introduced, they described me, "This is Vera, the teacher of Ashtanga Cascais!" He smiled, friendly, and not passed a few minutes, he began with the talk that I hear often on the part of my colleagues. That with all due respect, they tend to say fallacies about Ashtanga.
Still with the wet face of salt water, board under his arm and grin, he said, "Yeah,  the Ashtanga! I like a lot of the dynamic of the practice,  but the problem of the method is that it can not be taught to beginners or to older people!" Without going into a kind of discussion, and knowing that we are all free to have different opinions, I always try to explain, in the simplest form, that since 2007 I have been teaching Ashtanga for beginners, the vast majority are people who have never practiced Yoga in their life! And they already are a few years of experience proving that the idea that we need to start doing other types of Yoga because the Ashtanga is a tooooooo complicated, toooooo difficult, with manyyyyy level of difficulty, or that only flexibleeeeeee, strongggggg and younggggg people are the ones that can practice, are completely wrong settings!
No matter the degree of flexibility or strength, nor age neither gender, and I take the opportunity and I add, that it is not an impediment to the practice neither if you  have a more nervous nature, or being  more restless, or more stressed. Everyone can practice Ashtanga, the important thing is that the teaching process is done respecting the abilities and needs of each student, so that the practitioner has the time to create important foundations that help to clean, align and strengthen the body as steps for a naturally calming the mind. It is a slow, personal and gradual process, where we introduced the techniques defined by Shri K. Pattabhi Jois.

Whenever I talk about these issues, I always end by remember my older students, who were also beginners and after a few years  are still continuing to practice. I even dare to say that many, after all these years, become regular practitioners, with greater physical, mental and emotional skills than some younger practitioner.
Experience and age are not prohibitive to start practicing Ashtanga Yoga, the only thing it takes is willpower and some perseverance. As Guruji spoke, the ones who can not do Ashtanga Yoga are the lazy ones!
